Leon Day Little League Shines at Leon Day Park
The
founding of Leon Day Park three years ago has worked magic for the children and
families who were neighbors of National Baseball Hall of Famer Leon Day (‘95).
Leon’s love and involvement with children made it clear that the love
of athletics is a key to keeping them off the streets and away from drugs.
Peter Angelos, majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles, funded the
diamonds, basketball courts, playground, fabulous lighting system, dugouts and
viewing stands at Leon Day Park in the Rosemont Community of downtown Baltimore.
The playground is particularly a source of pride that attracts families
from all around, bringing the neighborhood together with great purpose.

On August 10, 2002 around 11 AM, the
end of season awards ceremony will be held at Leon Day Park (1200 Franklintown
Rd.) to honor the best players on four Leon Day Little League teams.
Trophies will be awarded to all the players, but thanks to donations from
Hieronimus & Co., Inc. (promoting the legacy of Negro Leagues Baseball for
over ten years), the top players will also be treated to autographed sports hero
collectibles. The Best Hitters, Fielders, Pitchers and Most Improved
Players will receive authenticated autographed items like a Tiger Woods Nike
ballcap, a Ray Lewis Ravens football helmet, and autographed items from Cal
Ripken, Jr. Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, and Leon Day.
Hieronimus & Co. will also present to the League an assortment of
Negro League, Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson collectibles, and a library of books
on the history and superstars of the Negro Baseball Leagues.
On hand to award these items will be Leon’s widow, Mrs. Geraldine Day,
her 8-year-old grandson, Leon Day, Jr., and the commissioner of the Leon Day
Little League, Paul Phair (contact: 410-978-8512).
